walden

Inspired by the book by Henry David Thoreau, Walden is an independent association dedicated to artistic creation, in all its states and forms. It originates in the desire to encourage exchanges and encounters between artists from Asia and artists from the Luberon, a region of France with a rich history of artistic creation.

Nested in the woods for the former and perched in a small medieval village for the later, Walden Cabin and Walden Village are two sites of creation and artistic research. They welcome artists in residency and offer various programs of sharing and of exhibitions revolving around their work and the local communities.

As expressed in Thoreau’s diary, Walden wishes to help us carry on with the joy and marvel to be in the world, with the absolute freedom of this poet and pioneer of ecological thinking and with his openness to the unknown.

Walden was founded by Caroline Ha Thuc, independent art writer, researcher and curator based in Hong Kong. Ha Thuc has notably published “Nouvel art contemporain japonais,” “Contemporary Art in Hong Kong” and “After 2000: Contemporary Art in China.” Specialized in Asian contemporary art, she contributes regularly to different magazines such as ArtPress in France and Artomity/Cobo Social in Hong Kong.

I long for one of those old winding and uninhabited roads that lead out of cities ... a road that leads to the ends of the earth ... where the spirit is free ...  HD Thoreau
